A big issue in America is a small one in my eyes. This article was about how more than 20 states have increased taxing cigarettes and tobacco companies more to balance the budget. Well, obviously, if you smoke your upset by this, and if you own a company for tobacco you are even more upset. But one thing for sure is if that taxing tobacco more will help our budget then do it. And if taxing tobacco more helps people stop buying a pack of cigarettes, then do it.
On that note, I didn’t think Dewan wrote a good article. When I was looking for a topic to write about the letter to the editor about this article was more interesting than the actual article itself. Her transitions were not smooth and it bored me. Dewan never went into any statics saying that smoking is bad for you and she never got quotes from a tobacco company either .This article was written not biased but didn’t give the reader enough information either.

I don't get the point of states putting a tax on tobbaco. If they raise the price then more people will quit, which health wise is a really good thing, but financially is a bad thing. Even though the price will be higher, there will be less people buying it..so does it actually do anything?
This is an interesting issue. Taxing a proven carcinogen makes sense to us non-smokers, but when the government is making people pay more money for a leisure item during a recession, the health benefits of this tax are overlooked. Some even argue that this tax hurts the poor disproportionately. Whatever the long-term consequences may be, health-wise or financially, the short term side-effects are mixed.
I think there will definitely be mixed reactions to this tax because it has healthful benefits as well as financial drawbacks. Personally, I feel that if it will discourage people from smoking and keep them healthier in the long run, it is worth it. Although it may require people to pay more to feed their habit, it will show them some of the consequences of this habit and how it will eventually start to destroy their lives: their health will suffer as well as their finances.
